We think this is the year to look at growing your company. So we'll start at the beginning and talk about how to turn a good idea into a great company. Join us to hear from a panel of seasoned entrepreneurs who will tell you how they turned their idea into a thriving business. Some of our panelists are at the beginning stages, some are serial entrepreneurs and some are well established in their businesses. Learn how you can apply their wisdom to your own idea and become the next great company on the North Shore. Cost: $55 for investors and service providers and $45 for entrepreneurs and management candidates.

Speakers
David W. Ives, CEO, Niis, Inc.
Mr. Ives is Chief Executive Officer of Northshore International Insurance Services, Inc. [“NiiS”], an international insurance management and consulting company headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts. He is a recognized leading expert in the insurance industry worldwide. Mr. Ives is also a private equity investor. He has started, organized, sold and acquired businesses and been involved in every part of private equity investing in three active businesses as well as several prior companies. Mr. Ives has been recently been appointed Entrepreneur in Residence at the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State College and Enterprise Center at Salem State College. He has an ongoing involvement as the CEO of NIIS but has taken on this additional responsibility to apply his knowledge to help students and small business owners and growth companies.
Mr. Ives holds a B.S. degree from University of Maine. He is a current member and past president of the Board of Trustees for the Insurance Library Association of Boston; a member of the Society of CPCU including Claims, Risk Management, International Insurance, Reinsurance, and Excess and Surplus Lines sections; former director of the Society of CPCU, Boston Chapter; member of the Self Insurance Institute of America; and International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
Gary Paul Magnant, MS. CEO, Sage Science
Mr. Magnant is Chief Executive Officer of Sage Science which designs and develops instrumentation for research and diagnostic applications for sale under the Sage Science brand. The Company also does contract OEM development and manufacturing. Sage Science's team consists of experienced officers with prior leadership positions in companies such as Owl Scientific & Matrix Technologies (see NYSE:TMO) and MJ Research (see AMEX:BIO). Sage Science is privately-funded. Sage Science is currently headquartered in the former New England Biolabs complex in Beverly, MA, USA.
Prior to Sage Science, Mr. Magnant served as Vice President of MJ Research, a leading manufacturer of thermal cycling instrumentation for DNA research. At MJ he also served as interim CEO of their Genesys Technologies division, a manufacturer of DNA sequencing instrumentation. He was also the founding Chairman and President of Owl Scientific a leading brand of electrophoresis apparatus now owned by Thermo Fisher. Magnant was a co-founding CEO and Chairman of ThermoCeramiX a contract development and manufacturing firm focused on disruptive new electric heating technology currently being deployed in automotive, appliance and other large industries. He is also a co-founder of ActivBiotics a heavily venture-backed pharmaceutical development company. Magnant holds life science degrees from UMASS - Dartmouth and Montana State University.
Sage Science will begin selling a line of molecular auto-analyzers and sample prep instruments (Pippin Prep) in Q4 2009.
Douglas C. Bates, M.S., M.B.A., Chief Business Officer and Co-Founder, Apredica
Mr. Bates is the Chief Business Officer and co-founder of Apredica, a preclinical contract research laboratory launched in 2006. Apredica now has over 115 clients, from every continent except Antarctica. Apredica was funded through bootstrapping and some friends and family investors. He is also Principal of Aderit, an internet marketing consultancy he founded in 2001. Previously he held roles in marketing management for Aquent, Nequity, Signet Bank, Providian, and The Franklin Mint. Mr. Bates holds an A.B. degree from Dartmouth College, an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.
Before Apredica launched it was a contestant in the 2006 North of Boston Business Plan Competition, winning first place.
